Find a partner for survival games

In survival games a partner is not a buff, he is a requirement. A solo player on a fresh Rust wipe is walking loot for the first duo with bows, and in Tarkov one burst from a bush takes gear you spent a week collecting. So nobody here looks for company for the evening — they look for someone to hand the base key and their back in a raid. That is the rarest kind of teammate: skill shows in one run, but whether he will cut and run with the loot takes weeks to find out.

Rust: the crew is built before the wipe, not after

Rust runs on cycles. Official servers wipe on the first Thursday of the month, most modded ones weekly, and the first hours of a wipe decide everything: whoever locks himself into a stone base and reaches guns first sets the rules for the neighbourhood. Solo players barely take part in that race, which makes duo and trio the default format: one farms nodes, one builds and places traps, one holds the spawn. Then comes the part you physically cannot solo — the base needs guarding while you sleep, so what has to match is not taste in games but online schedules. Tarkov and Hunt: trust beats aim

Extraction is the genre's other pole. In Escape from Tarkov dying in a raid means losing everything you carried, which makes one regular partner worth more than any stack of randoms: he knows your routes, covers the extract and hauls your bag out if you drop in minute one. Parties go up to five, but most people run duo — less noise, less chance of friendly fire. Before the first raid settle three things: split the loot or keep your own, quests or fights, and what the survivor does if the other dies on spawn. Hunt: Showdown adds permanent hunter death to the formula: duo is the default format there, and silence on comms is a mechanic, because sound gives away your position.

Stalcraft: the genre's Russian phenomenon

Stalcraft is the rare big survival game that grew up inside the Russian internet: a blocky Zone in the spirit of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., anomalies, emissions, artifact farming and runs to the north where going alone is a bad idea. For building a team that has one huge upside — almost the entire player base speaks Russian, so arranging a raid does not start with a language check. The fifth game is Palworld, the calm pole of the collection: co-op for up to four on a friend server, a base, Pal-powered automation and tower bosses. People come here for survival without a knife in the back, but pick partners by the same rule — a matching schedule beats skill.

Four checks before the first run

1. Goal. PvP action versus peaceful farming is the genre's main divide. The aggressor is bored with a farmer, the farmer is terrified of the aggressor, and the bio usually shows which one you are reading from the first line.
2. Schedule. In Rust an unguarded base is a gift to the neighbours; in Tarkov it is softer, but a partner who is online in different hours is useless either way. The city filter is free and works as a time-zone proxy; the dedicated time-zone filter is Premium.
3. Voice. Extraction does not work without comms: short calls decide fights. After a match, GSPOT chat lets you trade voice messages and hear the person before he hears your footsteps.
4. Trust test. Make the first run on cheap gear. Someone who grabs everything on a budget run will do worse with real loot on the line — the common schemes are covered in gaming scams.
